It is no secret that the world we’re living in right now is very different than when we were growing up. We now have social media being the norm and it seems to make people grow up too fast. We have to keep tabs on what our kids are doing online and prepare ourselves or what to do if they’re doing something they shouldn’t. And that’s what Denver, Colorado mom, Val Starks had to do.
Val Starks, at the time, had a 13-year-old daughter and anyone who has raised teens knows it can be a challenging age. They’re right at the cusp of pushing for more freedoms and exploring the world. But, 13 years old might sound old to your 13-year-old, but to us, they’re still babies. And babies should not be on social media. Which is why many parents restrict social media use and may have boundaries on what social sites they’re able to go on and which ones they can’t.
For Val, Facebook was off-limits for her 13-year-old teen and that completely makes sense. It’s one of those networks where you’re not always sure what they will be exposed to.
So when she found out her daughter had a secret Facebook account, that she hid from her mom, she was upset. And then when she saw what her daughter had posted, she knew she had to act fast.
