The Season of Giving–Safely

Giving to Charities Without Giving Up Your Safety

From Yahoo!

With the end of the year drawing to an end and breast cancer awareness month upon us, you may be thinking about making a charitable contribution – perhaps it is in the spirit of giving, for tax purposes or for personal cause close to your heart.  Whatever the reason, it will be helpful to know that many organizations accept financial contributions via mail, as well as the Web, making this an easy and quick option.

The last quarter of the year is one of the busiest times of the year for charitable donations.  However, online scammers are on the prowl to sink their teeth into the money that is exchanged online.  In fact, it is estimated that the cost of Internet scams and traps cost Americans more than 7 billion dollars, according to Consumer Reports Research Center.

So, to help ensure that your charitable donation counts, Yahoo! has provided a few tips to follow to be a safe giver online:

Use a Secure Site to Transact Business – When reaching a secure page online, a small lock logo will appear at the bottom right corner of the screen.  The URL address in the top will list it as “https” (the “s” is added to show it is secure) vs. “http.”

Avoid Password Theft – You should create sign-in seals, which is a safeguard offered by Yahoo! and many financial institutions to help protect the login experience. They also help avoid online phishing scams.
