On Sunday night, Oprah Winfrey got the whole world talking. At the 75th Annual Golden Globes, Winfrey was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which is bestowed on people who make “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” When accepting her award, Oprah gave a powerful, moving speech that brought the audience of celebrities to its feet. But there’s one celebrity who isn’t applauding: British singer/songwriter Seal.
Oprah’s speech focused on not only racial injustices, but the powerful #MeToo movement. Winfrey spoke passionately about women who had suffered abuse in the past, saying that the time of women not being believed is now over. She implored not only the audience of celebrities, but also viewers at home and leaders all around the world to continue fighting hard to “take us to the time when nobody ever has to say “Me too” again.”
Twitter and other social media platforms exploded with praise for Winfrey’s words. Some were so fired up by her speech that they started an “Oprah2020” hashtag in the hopes Winfrey would run for President. Bafflingly, Seal not only didn’t agree, but he posted a meme about Oprah on his Instagram account that accused her of being a hypocrite.
The #MeToo and #TimesUp movements were the talk of this year’s Golden Globes. Celebrities dressed in black to show solidarity in stopping sexual harassment in the workplace.
