School Bus Driver Fired After 4-Year-Old Left On Freezing Bus Alone As Mom Frantically Searched

My kids have all taken a school bus at some time in their academic career and for the most part I have never worried about their safety. When my kids were younger and in elementary school we lived close enough to the school that I would walk them or drive them if the weather was bad. We then moved to an area that didn't even provide school buses so my kids had to bike to school everyday and if the weather was bad I would drive them, but now we've moved once again and for the first time all four of my kids take the school bus every day. They've never had any issues with their bus but my youngest is also almost out of elementary school, so I don't really worry about them anyway. If I had a preschooler or kindergartner taking the school bus I think I'd maybe be a bit more worried about their safety and bus protocol to ensure no child was ever left behind, because no parent ever wants to worry about their child being forgotten somewhere. That's exactly what happened to one mother as she waited for her daughter at her daycare only to find out that she never got off her school bus. What Happened? It was around 5:30 pm on a Monday evening when JoAnne Chartier arrived at her daughter, Ellery's daycare to pick her up, only to discover that she couldn't find her daughter. She spoke to CBC News and said she approached the daycare staff about the whereabouts of her daughter. "I was told, 'She didn't get off the bus today,'" said Chartier. "I said, 'What do you mean she didn't get off the bus?'" Like any parent, panic began to quickly set in and Chartier began to frantically make phone calls, including calling her daughter's kindergarten to ensure she had actually gotten on the bus. The school confirmed she did. “At that point, I know my daughter, I was pretty sure that she either fell asleep on the bus or someone took her. Those are the only options,” she told CTV News. “She’s way too smart to get off at a different bus stop.” Chartier also alerted the police and called the bus transportation company as well. She Fell Asleep To make matters worse for the panicked mom, she couldn't reach the bus company. "It was a parent's worst nightmare," she told CBC. "I had no idea where she was or even how to find her because the bus company was unreachable." Chartier's sister turned to a mom's group she belongs to on Facebook to spread the word that the little girl was missing and that they needed to get in touch with someone from the bus company. The news site reports that the post was successful in reaching a woman who worked for the bus company who was able to help the family out. When they were able to get inside the locked yard where the school buses were kept, they found Ellery on her bus, 'shaking and cold.' "Ellery said she was sitting on the bus and was being quiet because you're supposed to be quiet on the bus," her mother said. Her mother told CTV that her daughter was OK when she was found. “She was in pretty good spirits. I don’t think she really realized what was going on,” Chartier said. “I’m pretty sure she was sleeping the whole time.” Fired CG Pearson Bus Lines transportation manager Ryan Pearson confirmed to the CBC that the bus driver, who had been driving for 16 years, had been fired from the company after the incident. "The immediate response was to obviously make sure the child was safe and to get the child back to their parents safely," he said, before confirming the driver failed to do a 'child check,' before leaving the bus. "Our drivers as a rule are very good people who are very conscientious of what they do," he added. All of us are really, truly sorry for the incident that happened and we will do everything in our power to make sure this never happens again." Pearson says they're looking at making emergency numbers more easily accessible for parents and ensuring that drivers have to radio in to dispatch to ensure a child check has been made at each section of their run. Chartier is angry she had no way of reaching the bus company and plans to take legal action. "If there's a child trapped on the bus because your employee didn't check, you should be reachable," said Chartier.
