Can Free ‘Baby Boxes’ Reduce Infant Deaths?

For close to 75 years, Finland’s government has gifted expecting parents in its country with “baby boxes.” The country has become famous for its baby boxes, which include pretty much everything a new parent might need to care for a baby, including clothes, bathing supplies, and feeding products.

But the most important part of the Finnish baby box is the fact that the box itself doubles as a separate, safe sleeping environment for the baby. Once the parents empty the box, they can use the box as a crib with the included baby mattress and fitted sheet. The box is so important because it helps give families an easy and safe separate sleeping environment for babies and as a result, many people credit the decreasing rates of SIDS in Finland to the introduction of the baby boxes.
