This Mom Wants The Story Of Sleeping Beauty Removed From School Curriculum

Do we need to take the issue of consent more serious?

Fairy tales have been a huge part of my life as a child and as a parent. I remember reading stories like Cinderella, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and Sleeping Beauty to my kids because they were such a huge part of my life as a child. As they got older we were thrilled that Disney had made so many movies that we could take the kids to see their favorite stories on the big screen as well.

Sure, as I got older I saw some issues with the books, like not wanting my child to wait for her ‘Prince Charming’ to come along to live ‘happily ever after’, but so many of the more current fairy tales promote equality and female empowerment that it’s easy to forget that some of the others aren’t quite so politically correct.

When parents take a closer look at the fairy tales we’ve grown up with it’s easy to begin to wonder if we should still be reading these books to our kids given the messages some of them promote.

One UK woman is now demanding that her six year old son’s school ban the book Sleeping Beauty claiming that that it sends an ‘inappropriate’ message to children.
