Oh my goodness, can you even imagine? A family in Idaho is suing their fertility doctor, after discovering that he secretly fathered their child 36 years ago. They filed the $10 million suit against retired Dr. Gerald E. Mortimer and his former employer, Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates of Idaho Falls, Idaho. Sally Ashby and Howard Fowler, who are now divorced, allege that the doctor used his own sperm during fertility treatments on the couple in 1980. But he didn’t inform them, and never revealed to the couple, that their daughter was biologically his. The daughter, Kelli Rowlette, made the shocking discovery in July.
Kelli wanted to find out more about her genealogy, so she took a DNA test from Ancestry.com. DNA testing has gotten incredibly popular over the last few years, with many services promising to unravel your genealogical history. But Kelli got way more than she bargained for. Her DNA results revealed that her father was not her biological father. The service kicked back a name that she didn’t recognize as a DNA match. Her mother, however, recognized the name. To make matters worse, Kelli didn’t even know she’d been conceived using fertility treatments. A few months later, Kelli found her birth certificate, and connected the dots when she saw the name of the doctor who signed it.
