Careful Moms: New Report Says Diet Mixers Can Get You Drunk Faster

I don’t really drink except for the holidays, and even though I only have one or two drinks before calling it a night. I’m not a huge drinker because a) hangovers are not my thing and b) I gain weight easily as it is, and I don’t want to worry about the extra calories that usually come with a mixed drink. And that’s probably why a lot of people love diet mixers but unfortunately a new report says that while they’ll save you on the calories, there’s a chance they will get you drunk a whole lot faster.

According to Xpose, researchers from the Northern Kentucky University studied 20 men and women, having them take a Breathalyzer test after drinking either a vodka and lemonade or vodka and diet lemonade.

While the amount of alcohol was the same, the readings were up by 25 percent for those who’d had diet mixers.

Now, researchers want bars and restaurants to warn their customers about the dangers of “diet” drinking.

As for why the readings were so different, it’s believed sugary mixers could act in the same way as food, slowing the passage of alcohol to the bloodstream, claims the research in the Drug and Alcohol Dependence journal.
